Cell phones received their first major upgrade when they went from 1G to 2G. This leap took place in 1991 on GSM networks first, in Finland, and effectively took cell phones from analog to digital.

2G Mobile Phone Advantages
When 2G was introduced to cellphones, it was praised for several
reasons. Its digital signal used less power than analog signals so
mobile batteries lasted longer.
Environmentally friendly 2G technology made possible the introduction of SMS—the short and incredibly popular text message—along with multimedia messages (MMS) and picture messages. 2G's digital encryption added privacy to data and voice calls. Only the intended recipient of a call or text could receive or read it.
2G Mobile Phone Disadvantages
The weaker digital signal transmitted by the cellular phone can not be sufficient to reach the cell tower in less populous areas , It causes a particular problem on 2G systems deployed on higher frequencies , but is mostly not a problem on 2G systems deployed on lower frequencies , The national regulations differ greatly among the countries which dictate where 2G can be deployed .
The digital will start to completely fail , by dropping calls or being unintelligible , while analog slowly gets worse , generally holding a call longer and allowing at least some of the audio transmitted to be understood.
